Read this in a day and really enjoyed it. Loved the way Great Expectations is used as the centre point of the book.

If you want an enjoyable short read this is well worthwhile

I really enjoyed this book, there where a few twists and turns, but it ultimatley showed the distrust between the black villagers and the only white man on the island who gains the children's trust, particularly Matilda by reading Great Expectations.
Matilda sees herself in Pip (character from Great Expectations). the story helps her to forget her own life, as well as dealing with some traumatic experiences which take place when the red soliders visit.

I liked the fact that the book continued on to when Matilda was grown up and how she still had a huge interest in Charles Dickens literature.

It took me three days to read, i just couldn't put it down, well done Mr Jones.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars A beautiful and thought-provoking read.

Admitedly, the colourful floral cover attracted me to this book but I'm glad it did because it made me read the synopsis which convinced me to buy it.
In a nutshell, Mister Pip is a very moving story which centres around a young girl called Matilda who lives in a village threatened by Civil War and is taught by a white man, Mr Watts who teaches his class about Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the only book on the Island.
Although the story is very touching, there are also some upsetting parts in it which shocked me a little when I was reading it. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is that I found it slightly tedious at times and the fact that it was upsetting in some areas further contributes to my rating.
This book is a nominee of the Galaxy Book Awards 2008 and in my opinion, it's is worth a read It didn't me long to finish as it is a relatively short book, so I would recommend this if you can read without taking things to much to heart.
