Review

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam's unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women's endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end, it is love that triumphs over death and destruction. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is an unforgettable portrait of a wounded country and a deeply moving story of family and friendship. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and an indestructible love

I cannot recomend this book enough, l defy anyone not to be moved by it. I actually shouted out aloud at one part of the book and cried more than l care to mention. Absolutely fantastic and it is written so beautifully. I have just started reading The kite runner which l think is his first novel (back to front l know!) and l can see myseld saying the same about that one as well.

An absolutely phenomenal writer. He gets you not just into the story but into this beautifully developed world that he creates. By the last page you feel that you were one of the characters of the story, not just an observant. It is a truly gritty tale but shows the truth depth of human beauty and the ability to endure and overcome the most horrific of ordeals. He is a MUST read, but trust me...you'll be bawling like a baby from start to finish!

I read the Kite Runner before ATSS and was just captivated by the literary genius that is Mr Hosseni. This novel will bring out your every emotion and you can really feel for the characters and particularly the trials and tribulations they are put through. The ending is perfect and shows that love can defeat all major obstacles in life, especially under Taliban rule in Afghanistan at the time the book is set. Recommended to everyone, absolutely unputdownable!! I dare anyone not to shed a single tear...Khaled Hosseini has a special gift and this book will tug at your heart strings.
